The Scandal Point in Shimla, as the name suggests, is one of the most talked about attractions of this hill station.
The titillating title surely piques one's interest, and the gripping story behind it does justice to the intrigue created.
Shimla is one of the most scenic hill stations of the north and is renowned for being the perfect destination that packs it all- unparalleled natural beauty, exciting adventure as well as complete spiritual and inner relaxation.
The Scandal Point is one such attraction in Shimla whose enthralling scenic beauty stands as a testimony to the city's stellar reputation.
Scandal Point rests on the intersection of the city's most roads- Ridge Road and Mall Road.
This point is a mountain lover's haven because it enjoys a picturesque and unobstructed view of gigantic mountains covered in a blanket of dense fir and spruce.
On this intersection, there also lies a statue of our revered freedom fighter- Sri Lala Lajpat Raiji.
Scandal Point is a year-round magnet where people come to relax and rejuvenate amidst the view of the soaring mountains.
One can opt for a horse ride at this point, enjoy some hill station Maggi and play some arcade games in the small shops that surround this point.
Scandal Point is located to the western edge of Shimla where two of the city's most important roads, The Ridge and Mall Road, converge.
This pleasant small square which is over looked by the mock-Tudor state post office has the bizarre name of Scandal Point and where there is an intriguing name there must be an equally gripping story, which sadly, can be only loosely based on facts.
The tale of the Scandal Point involves the Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh who was regarded as a charismatic and charming character and the impressionable daughter of the British Viceroy.
This either kidnap or elope did not go unnoticed by the British Viceroy (Lord Kitchener) who with his power or influence could have had the Maharaja severely punished.
The punishment he choose was only to expel the Maharaja of Patiala from Shimla, where upon the Maharaja constructed his summer capital 50miles away in Chail.
Parts of the tale are true while others sadly are not. Bhupinder Singh became the central character to the tale as he had a justified reputation as a womanizer and extrovert who married many wives.
It is also true that the Maharaja did infuriate and even enrage Lord Kitchener who forced him out of the summer capital of Shimla.
In an act of defiance the Maharaja relocated his summer capital to the small town of Chail in 1891.
There is doubt of Bhupinder Singh's age at the time of the scandal some records indicate that he was only a baby at the time of the kidnap.
One interesting side note which is possibly the origins of the story is that Bhupinder Singh's father, Rajindra Singh, had an English wife.
The place at Chail also has the inscriptions of RS indicating Rajindra Singh had the building constructed.
The truth of the story has been lost over the time so all that remains is more scandal over Scandal Point.
One of the most popular tourist attractions of Shimla, Scandal Point is the intersection between The Mall and The Ridge. This is the point where the end of the Mall Road joins the Ridge.  The very name given to this placed adds a tint of mystery to it. It has been named so after a romantic folklore. The story says that during the British Era in 1892, Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patalia fell in love with the daughter of the viceroy. It is believed that the king and viceroy’s daughter eloped from this point, way back in 1892. Therefore, he was banned from entering Shimla. Later on, he founded the new summer capital of Chail for himself, which is around 45 km from Shimla. The intersection between the Mall and the Ridge from where they eloped was named Scandal Point.
