Located 11 km away from Shimla, close to NH-22, the Reserve Forest Sanctuary is an ideal destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.
Sprawling in an expanse of 951 hectares, this reserve has varying altitudes that range from 1900 m to 2620 m.
From this sanctuary, you can behold breathtaking views of Deo Tibba, Chota Shali, Bandar Poonch, Rakta Dhar, Badrinath and Pir Panjal – some of the most majestic Himalayan Mountains.
The reserve is connected to the Chail Sanctuary in the south through a forest corridor.
This wildlife refuge is populated by vivid flora and fauna.
The Himalayan deodar, pine, oak, rhododendron, horse chestnut and maple are most widely found trees.
Exotic plants like weeping willows and silver oak also dot the area. During the monsoon season, cobra plant, wild strawberries and other berries grow in abundance.
The rich wildlife of this sanctuary includes animals like kakkar (barking deer), jackal, leopard, and birds like Himalayan eagle, chikor, partridge and pheasant.
With nine perennial streams, including Churat Nala and God Ki Nala flowing through this area, this catchment is a major water supply for Shimla.
Chharabra, a small village in the confines of the sanctuary, serves as a summer retreat to the President of India and as summer residence to the Governor of Punjab.
Owing to security reasons, tourists must seek prior permission to visit this place.
The sanctuary not only attracts people with its rich wildlife and vegetation, but also offers adventurous activities like trekking and mountaineering.

It is a flat trail, so not difficult for non-walkers.
Bicycles could be taken on rent, but all of them were non operational!
Make sure you wear appropriate footwear and sunscreen.If you carry binoculars, you could enjoy watching landscapes, trees, birds, butterflies etc. Camera is a must! Amazing photo results with light and shade on the route!Names of trees are marked on various trees.
